The Brief

Select one designer whose visual language and design philosophy makes a connection to you. Design a sleeve folder that will show your personal interpretation or homage to this designer. The design will be on the front of the folder.

Concept

I chose Ikko Tanaka as the designer I want to pay homage to because I was very attracted to the fact that he was responsible for the design in Muji which is my favourite store to go to. Morever, the most admirable part about Ikko Tanaka is his deep love for his country’s culture.

The most prominent works of Ikko Tanaka demostrates his sensitivity to shapes and he is able to play with geometric shapes to create beautiful illustrations that still carry his traditional roots.

In my work, I have decided to adapt the style of Tanaka’s poster design (Nihon Buyo performance by the Asian Performing Arts Institute) and recreate his portrait. On the other hand, the typography below is adapted from Tanaka’s Nippon Poster 1955-’72 where each letter contained a traditional Japanese pattern.
